Prominent Nigerian actor Kanayo O. Kanayo aka Nnayi Sacrifice is upset over the government’s new laws that remove rituals and other potential performances from films, music videos and sketch content.

The Executive Director and Director General of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Shaibu Husseini, said days ago that the Federal Government has approved the ban on monetary rituals and glamorization of vices in Nigerian films.

Husseini revealed this while speaking at a national stakeholders meeting on smoke-free Nollywood in Enugu on Wednesday, May 22. The NFVCB boss said in part:

“When my predecessor approached the former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, about the need to draft subsidiary legislation to limit the exhibition of smoking in Nigerian films, he saw the need to include money-related rituals. Others included in the regulation are ritual murders. and glamorize other crimes to further clean up the film industry.

According to Husseini, apart from health concerns, highlighting smoking in movies has a negative impact on teenagers and young adults, who make up the majority of Nigerian moviegoers. He stated that the board planned to implement extensive enlightenment campaigns in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, local communities, religious organizations and other institutions.

Kanayo criticized the policy, calling it “absolute nonsense.” He questioned lawyer Hannatu Musa Musawa’s justification for imposing such restrictions on filmmakers and mocked his mandate.
