Exams for first year high school students announced

The Government has announced a new assessment for students starting in the first year of school.

Education Minister Erica Stanford said that starting in 2025, phonics screening of children will begin at 20 and 40 weeks of schooling.

Twice-yearly “progress monitoring” would also be introduced in reading, writing and maths for children in grades three to eight.

Stanford said the assessment was intended to give parents certainty about their children’s learning.
