Controversy surrounds death of Ebonyi varsity student after failed exam

Controversy has surrounded the death of a final year student of the Ebonyi Abakaliki State University, identified as Favor Ugwuka, on Wednesday night.

Our correspondent gathered that Ugwuka took his life at his hostel at the school’s Ishieke Campus in Abakaliki.

Further investigation revealed that the deceased, a senior in the English Department, passed all of her courses but repeatedly failed one particular course, the professor of which had allegedly promised she would never pass.

It was learned that the late Ugwuka went into depression after several attempts to pass the said course and was frequently seen on campus wandering alone until she decided to take her life on Wednesday night.

In a video seen online by our correspondent, a woman supposedly the mother of the deceased blames a teacher for making her daughter commit suicide.

According to the woman, who is seen lamenting in the video, “The teacher said he is the best, that no one can teach like him. He should come and take my daughter who has committed suicide.”

Likewise, a graduate of the institution who identified himself as Rex Nwome stated that the girl committed suicide because she had been failing a certain course repeatedly.

He said: “Favour was my classmate and best friend in the English Department. The aforementioned professor vowed to never allow Favor to graduate.

“You can imagine that he then passed every course except that professor’s, and had to pay another extra year of tuition to rewrite.

“Unfortunately the man failed him again. What resulted in this intense depression is the latest NYSC names that were shortlisted recently, and his name was not there.”

He added: “The girl suffered a lot of depression because they just let her wander around EBSU looking for help. She was very desperate to graduate and serve. This and many more disgusting stories resulted in this suicide mission.

“I wish I hadn’t gone that far to end his life. RIP Ugwuka Favor until we meet so as not to separate us anymore.”

The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the incident on Thursday.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Joshua Ukandu, told our correspondent that the matter was reported to the headquarters.

He said, “Yes, the command received the report of a female student suicide.”

At the time of filing this report, efforts to obtain reaction from the university were unsuccessful.
