Uganda Everything ready for the FIBA Afrobasket Zone V U18 Qualifiers

Uganda will host the FIBA Afrobasket Zone V U18 qualifiers and preliminaries, which will be held at the MTN Indoor Arena, Lugogo (Kampala), between June 9 and 14, 2024.

The Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) launched the playoffs at the Fairway Hotel on Thursday, where members of the FUBA Executive Committee, U18 boys and girls coaches, other team officials and players were in attendance.

Ten countries, including hosts Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Eritrea, Burundi, Ethiopia and Sudan, have confirmed their participation.

The winners of the tournament, both men and women, after the preliminary rounds will directly qualify for the Afrobasket U18 Championship in South Africa.

Egypt, who won the 2022 FIBA U18 African Championship (men) and were runners-up in the women’s category, will automatically play in the 2024 edition with a wild card, thus missing the preliminary games.

Team Uganda will have Mugisha Amos (Junior Silverbacks) and Husnah Abubaker (Junior Gazelles) as boys and girls captains respectively.

The two were the captains of their teams during the U16 African Championship that was played in Tunisia in 2023, where the boys finished tenth with 1 win in 5 matches and the girls finished sixth with 2 wins in 6 matches.

The FIBA U18 Afrobasket Zone V preliminaries are a qualifying event for the FIBA U18 African Women’s Championship 2024 and the FIBA U18 African Championship to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa in August this year.
