Tinubu orders review of university governing councils

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday ordered a comprehensive review of the newly announced boards of directors for Nigerian tertiary institutions.

This directive precedes the planned inauguration and retirement of the nominees.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced in a House of Representatives statement titled “President Tinubu leads comprehensive review of governing boards of tertiary institutions.”

Onanuga highlighted that the nominations did not reflect the federal character of the country, with discrepancies such as some states receiving only one nomination while others had multiple appointments.

“The nomination does not reflect the federal character of the country as some states got only one nomination while others got many,” he said.

Previously, Tinubu had authorized the appointment of 555 persons to serve as pro-chancellors/presidents and members of the governing boards of 111 federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, according to a list compiled by the Ministry of Education.

The review order came after significant public backlash, including protests from the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics.

The President “as he directs a complete review of the list of governing council members, welcomes feedback from across the country.

“President Tinubu is committed to ensuring strict compliance with the principle of federal character enshrined in the Constitution. The review will also take into account the national spread and ensure that every part of the country is adequately represented,” Onanuga said.

The inauguration and withdrawal of the nominees are scheduled for May 31, 2024.

Among those appointed is former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega, appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. The members are Mary Yisa, RO Kazeem, Prof. Usman Musa and Dr. Anthony Usoro.

Wole Olanipekun. (SAN), has been appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Board of the University of Lagos, whose members include Prof. SE Ogbeide, Rufai Chanchangi, Mrs. Glory Ekpo-Oho and Patricia Yakubu, among others.
