The Rondo: GOAL USA Roundtable on Alex Morgan’s Last Dance, Emma Hayes’ First Camp and the USWNT June Team

Our writers discuss Emma Hayes’ first USWNT squad, with big names returning to the fold

Emma Hayes’ tenure as USWNT coach is officially underway. The former Chelsea manager worked wonders in London, but now faces a different challenge on the international stage. After a disappointing performance at the 2023 World Cup, the USWNT will look to return to the top of world soccer in Paris this summer at the Olympic Games.

And it all starts next month.

Hayes has chosen his first squad and there are plenty of talking points. Alex Morgan is in the fold, but Lynn Williams missed the cut, while Ashley Sanchez is also out. However, does any of that matter? This is the strongest roster the United States has ever reinforced, but still… there are questions about whether or not the ex-Blue will be successful in the United States, about Morgan’s role in this team and the June camp roster .

Put it all together and it’s an intriguing start for the new coach, who will have to battle the sky-high expectations of the toughest job in women’s football.

To tear it all down, GOAL has recruited global women’s soccer writer Amee Ruszkai, as well as the regular cast of GOAL US writers, in the latest edition of… The Rondo.
